We think of it like a bromance, which still works between formal enemies or opponents but falls apart when one of them shows himself to be a psycho with a Rape & Murder Van. "the tone of the movie if you go by popular recollection" (bromance) not necessarily everything in the movie itself."the tone of certain aspects of the movie" like if you look at the ending and work backwards.General intense scary menace like other Bigelow movies.) Instead of "the tone of the movie" I maybe should have said: (And we even have that scary arms-smuggling shoot-out situation at the house, though I forgot their relation to Bodhi's gang, so the stakes are pretty crazy. Good points, you're right about it indeed fitting much of what we see in the movie: it is a Crime Gang plain and simple. De Niro pretty much never loses his cool no matter what role he's playing. I don't know if Heat is a good comparison because De Niro is a career criminal and a consummate professional, while these guys are kind of amateurs in a way. Maybe I'm just looking back on the 90's with rose tinted glasses. You don't see many mainstream, readily available action flicks with this amount of depth. And when you're in high stress situations like they constantly put themselves in the ego can break and the psyche can shatter.įor such a delicate premise I think it evolves pretty well. This breaks the group's identity and the have to forge a new one for survival. The reality check is when the first one dies and the game is shattered. Like, I feel violent crimes run in conflict to these kinds of thoughts. The whole premise of 4 surfers robbing banks while spouting Buddhist ideology isn't really plausible. It's funny because I think that is the saving grace that turns it from a 90's action flick to a 'real' movie. Swayze’s character loses most charm and it becomes very weird, hostage in a van, etc, which really does not fit with the tone of the movie. The only bad part of Point Break is where it goes full-on horror movie psycho.
